Position Summary

As chair, core responsibilities include the administration and stewardship of the department's financial and human resources to sustain and extend the work of the department, including budget management, faculty mentoring, workload agreements and performance management, staff supervision, representation and promotion of the department within UNCG and beyond, external partnerships and contract management, and other duties required as chair.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in educational leadership or related field and have attained the rank of tenured Associate Professor or higher. In addition, candidates must have ample experience teaching graduate students and have served as a mentor to include chairing dissertations and serving on doctoral committees in educational leadership, policy, foundations, and/or cultural studies and related fields.

Candidates must present evidence of collaborative and democratic leadership as well as demonstrate their administrative abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and their strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, research, community engagement, and support of service activities.

The individual must be able to both reflect and enhance the broad directions of the department. Specifically, the individual must be able to speak to both the educational leadership and the cultural foundations concerns of the department and exhibit a commitment to educational equity, human dignity, and democratic values. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with school district and other educational and community leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

We are interested in attracting candidates who add to the diversity of the department in terms of race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, (dis)ability, culture, perspective, academic specialty, and method of inquiry. The ideal candidate is an innovative and energetic leader who will make significant contributions to our practitioner-based masters and doctoral programs and scholar-focused PhD program. We seek a collegial department head who can provide visionary leadership and direction to a dynamic department; guide shared governance through transparency and involvement of faculty and staff in departmental decision-making; encourage cross-disciplinary work that promotes collaboration and community engagement; and contribute to the common interests of the School of Education.

We are looking for candidates whose primary area of research is educational leadership and related areas, such as, organizational studies and educational policy. We also value scholars whose work is interdisciplinary and intersectional in nature. That is, their leadership scholarship and teaching is informed by culture, history, religion, indigeneity, Women's and Gender Studies, and/or African American Studies, for example.

While our primary desire is for candidates who have earned the rank of Professor, we are also happy to consider candidates who are currently tenured associate professors, especially those who may qualify for advancement to full professor at UNCG upon hire.
