Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Utah Valley University is seeking a provost and vice president for academic affairs (VPAA) to serve as the chief academic officer; guide a collaborative academic leadership team to advance UVU's unique integrated mission as a teaching university and comprehensive community college committed to meeting the full range of credit and noncredit postsecondary educational needs of UVU's service region; champion teaching as the university and faculty's primary responsibility, supported by research, service, mentoring, advising, and other scholarly activities; provide leadership in implementing the university's Academic Master Plan and other long-range strategy, vision, and planning; and set the academic tone for the institution. This individual will oversee all administrative elements for academic affairs, from budgeting to academic program and service development, approval, and assessment; direct the recruitment, hiring, development, retention, tenure, and promotion processes and policies for faculty; and lead the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of academic programs and services. The provost and VPAA will be a voice and representation of the faculty, and model shared governance by working closely with the Faculty Senate, deans, department chairs, and other academic leaders to achieve UVU's mission, academic goals, and objectives.

Reporting directly to and working closely with the university's president, the provost and VPAA will provide leadership for the next stage of the institution's growth and transformation, including building and strengthening the digital platform. This individual will work with the UVU senior leadership team to identify and coordinate strategic and operational linkages among different divisions, with the end goal of harnessing synergies and clarifying deliverables that will enhance student success, achieve exceptional results, foster inclusion, promote access for underrepresented populations, strengthen community and industry partnerships in support of engaged learning, and ensure UVU's impact on, and relevance to, its service region. The provost and VPAA partners with senior university leaders and deans to refine and implement the master and strategic plans of the university and academic affairs, and to develop and meet development goals.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following credentials and experience:

Minimum:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an earned doctorate.
  • A minimum of five years of professional work experience, including full-time college-level faculty and administrative experience, with a proven record of teaching and/or research, service, and academic administration.
  • Eligibility for tenure in an academic department at UVU.

    Preferred:
  • Experience in higher education at an accredited university or comprehensive community college.
  • Exposure to (or familiarity with) digital transformation in higher education.

    • Knowledge of contemporary issues, including digital transformation, and emerging opportunities in postsecondary education (credit and non-credit) at the local, state, and national levels.
    • Knowledge of higher education laws, regulations, and policies.

    Skills:

    • Demonstrated skill as a strategic and collaborative leader, with the ability to foster consensus and commitment to achieve goals and objectives aligned with the university’s mission.
    • Demonstrated skill in initiating and leading continuous improvement, including planning, implementing, and evaluating academic programs, policies, and services.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated skill in supervising others and in conflict management and resolution.

    Abilities:

    • Strong personal and professional commitment and demonstrated ability to:
      - champion teaching and engaged learning as the university’s and the faculty’s primary responsibility, supported by research, service, mentoring, advising, and other university activities,
      - participate effectively in shared governance, and
      - build and maintain a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and administration.
    • Demonstrated ability to:
      - manage the complexities of an open admissions higher education institution,
      - direct academic program development, outcomes assessment, and improvement,
      - work effectively with individuals with diverse backgrounds and groups representing numerous perspectives and interests,
      - lead with both a decisive and consultative style, foster open communication and trust, and proactively build positive relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, and students,
      - manage and allocate resources (human, financial, and physical) in an effective and ethical manner to achieve goals and objectives,
      - lead a complex organization in an ever-changing environment,
      - manage grants, research activities and development at the college or university level,
      - advise and influence others and effectively contribute expertise that facilitates informed decision-making,
      - communicate effectively, persuasively, and credibly with a wide range of audiences, including faculty, staff, administrators, students, boards, and stakeholders,
      - identify and accomplish goals and achieve timely and high-quality results, and
      - initiate and lead innovative practices, programs, and services.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in higher education at an accredited university or comprehensive community college.
    • Exposure to, or familiarity with, digital transformation in higher education.


    Physical Requirements:
    Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
