Occupational Summary
The senior communications strategist researches, writes and edits a range of material for the president of Duke University, including speeches, talking points, columns, essays, presentations, correspondence, broadcast emails, and other executive-level communications. The position works closely with the vice president of public affairs and government relations, the senior assistant to the president, and other university communicators to ensure that presidential messages are communicated clearly and consistently to a variety of audiences and constituencies in diverse settings and that they reflect the president's values, vision and style. The senior communications specialist reports to the senior assistant to the president, with a dotted line to the vice president for public affairs and government relations, and serves as an integral member of the president's office staff and the community of university communicators.
Work Performed
  • Conceive, research, draft and edit presidential speeches, talking points, columns, essays, presentations, correspondence, broadcast emails, and other communications.
  • Work discreetly and uphold confidentiality on sensitive or delicate assignments.
  • Manage or assist with special projects, as requested.
  • Serve as President's Office liaison on collaborative writing projects with other offices. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of related experience required. Experience with executive speechwriting in a higher education, corporate, NGO or government setting strongly preferred. The ideal candidate must be highly organized and possess strong time management skills; excellent writing, editing, oral communication and research skills; and a willingness and ability to work within a highly collaborative, teamwork- based organization. The ideal candidate must be creative, have a sense of humor, and strong interpersonal skills.
