Just west of Atlanta, The University of West Georgia is a vibrant, 24 hour campus with over 13,300 students. The main campus is located in Carrollton Georgia with a second campus located twenty five miles southeast in Newnan Georgia. The University Police Department supports this mission by playing a critical role in the safety and protection of all constituents and serving as a campus partner to other units that address the needs of the University community.
Successful candidate will have a working knowledge of NIMS and ICS and experience in developing emergency operations plans and Incident Action Plans. Experience building cooperative working relationships with a wide range of constituencies; excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and a commitment to diversity.
UWG is looking for an individual that is focused on student success through a community oriented policing philosophy; leads through a strong example of integrity, inclusion and transparency; and possesses a high level of knowledge of higher education law enforcement policies, practices and accreditation standards.
The Chief of Police for UWG reports to the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance. As the senior law enforcement officer for the university the chief is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic planning and management of a nationally accredited university police department (CALEA). The chief of police directs a department of 42 staff members including 30 certified police officers. There are five divisions including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Technology, Professional Standards and Administration.
The Chief of University Police has significant financial management, budgeting, accounting and reporting duties. Additional responsibilities include the development of processes which continually assess campus safety needs and the effectiveness of police department programs and services; full compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act; and collaboration with the senior law enforcement officer of the University System of Georgia.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field. At least 15 years of law enforcement experience with 5 or more years in a supervisory capacity at the command level (Lieutenant or above). Must be eligible for Peace Basic Law Enforcement (PBLE) Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, or be able to attain this certification within one year of employment.
Five or more years of experience in a College or University setting.
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the position.
$83,436 Minimum - $121,000 Midpoint
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Applicant must be in good physical health, possess 20/20 vision or vision correctable to 20/20, ability to hear and speak clearly, walk, run, jump and lift 40 pounds. Ability to use a firearm safely and accurately is crucial. A professional appearance of applicant is required.
Does this position require any special certification/ license?
Eligible for certification by the Georgia POST Council within one year. Valid Georgia Driver’s License.
