Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Department of Clinical Sciences: We are dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health. Our laboratory, which houses two clinician-scientists, has the dual focus of investigations on skin immunologic diseases and immunologic /infectious reproductive diseases . North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
Essential Job Duties: Contribute and assist with translational research in the field of immunology and infectious diseases. The employee should understand the rationale for the research, and perform related laboratory procedures to test research hypotheses. The main techniques to master include tissue immunostaining for proteins (immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry) and nucleic acids (e.g. in situ hybridization), detection of soluble proteins in blood and/or tissue (e.g. ELISA, immunoblotting) and cell culture. The employee will be asked to also process samples for other techniques (e.g. PCR, microbiology, etc…) and to occasionally participate in animal studies. In addition, the employee is expected to perform general lab maintenance, such as ordering and stocking supplies, and updating laboratory safety and quality assurance plans. The employee will also assist with project planning and experimental design, collect and analyze data, present findings to the investigators, as well as assist with the teaching of students in the laboratory setting.
Department Required Skills: Effective concentration, attention to detail, analytical skills, organizational skills, time management skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. - Knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures, scientific principles and methods, and good laboratory practices. - Accurate record keeping and data collection skills are required. - Knowledge and ability to conduct scientific literature reviews, and critically evaluate published literature. - Ability to follow established laboratory protocols in compliance with institutional and federal regulations, and standard operating procedures. - Experience with literature databases and with laboratory techniques such as PCR, immunofluorescence, immunoblotting, protein, RNA & DNA isolation and purification. - Ability to multi-task, work independently and in a team, and coordinate various resources. - Experience with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. - Ability to write descriptions of research protocols and methods for grant publication and manuscript preparation. - Ability to collect and organize information in the format of spreadsheets, graphs, tables, and charts.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Two years of experience working in a laboratory.
