Occ Summary
Responsible for the daily care of multiple genetically distinct strains of mice for research purposes. Coordinate with vendors and supervisors on operational, administrative and technical responsibilities. May perform some surgery and post-operative care as directed.

Work Performed
  • Perform a variety of molecular and biochemical assays to obtain data pertinent to laboratory research; compile and document procedures and results.
  • Under the direction and supervision of laboratory personnel, oversee welfare of mouse colonies (wean mice at appropriate age, ear tag for identification).
  • Breed experimental animals as needed.
  • Maintain breeding colonies and colony records, and report changes and problems.
  • Attend to colony maintenance issues (examples: make sure specific mice get the correct experimental or post-surgical treatment; segregate and label mice for upcoming experiments).
  • Prior experience in these areas is not needed but would be helpful; training will be provided.
  • Perform mouse genotyping, including collection of tissues, processing tissues into DNA, executing PCR reactions to determine genotype, and performing euthanasia of unwanted mice.
  • Keep detailed records of genotypes, inventory and strains.
  • Prior experience in these areas is not needed but would be helpful; training will be provided.
  • Become proficient in a variety of anesthetic and euthanasia techniques as described in our animal protocols.
  • Assist in maintaining, updating and renewing lab animal protocols. Assist with training of other lab personnel with regard to mouse husbandry duties and with regard to new techniques and standard operating procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable of and teach other lab personnel regarding animal protocols.
  • Work with laboratory personnel to prepare materials and apparatus in support of ongoing research.
  • Obtain, prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examinations.
  • Prior experience in these areas is not needed but would be helpful; training will be provided.
  • Prepare reagents and solutions.
  • Assist with data management and record keeping.
  • Assist in the development of new research procedures and techniques
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Review work of lower-level laboratory personnel and assist in the training of new personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
