The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in cooperation with the Board of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities seeks an Executive Director of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities. The position is located at the ELCA churchwide organization in Chicago, IL.

The Executive Director supports the mission of the ELCA congregations and synods as expressed through this church’s colleges and universities. The position focuses on leading, collaborating, and executing on the shared work of the Network:

  • Maintaining dialogue among member institutions about their shared identity and mission as the ELCA in higher education;
  • Serving as the liaison between the College and University Network and the ELCA churchwide organization;
  • Articulating the vision of higher education in the Lutheran intellectual tradition;
  • Sustaining relationships among the institutions, between the institutions and other expressions of the ELCA, and between the Network and other institutions and associations of private higher education;
  • Developing institutional leadership;
  • Providing oversight for the programmatic areas for the Colleges and Universities as well as directing and administering the programs of the Network;
  • Providing programs and services.

This leadership position reports jointly to the Director for Missional Leadership/Candidacy, and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities. The Executive Director supervises the College and University Network Coordinator.

Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities

The colleges and universities recognized by the ELCA, and the churchwide organization of the ELCA, are members of the Network. It is governed by the presidents of the colleges and universities, who constitute the Network’s Board of Directors.

The Network has a national office located at the ELCA churchwide organization in Chicago. The Executive Director and Network Coordinator positions are located there. These two positions are under the direction of the Network’s Board of Directors through its Executive Committee and President.

Responsibilities

Executive Director of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities

  • Convenes, staffs, and is a voting member of the Board of Directors of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities and the Board’s committees. Is a member of and staffs the Board’s Executive Committee to manage the Network. Serves as a trustee of or advisor to Network members.
  • Provides oversight for the programmatic areas for the Colleges and Universities as well as directs and administers the programs of the Network.
  • Articulates a vision that sustains and strengthens the vocation of higher education within the mission of the ELCA.
  • Convenes presidents, administrators, and faculty for regular consultations about their work and the mission of this church in higher education.
  • Manages budgets exceeding $500,000, composed of churchwide funds, funds from Network members, and endowments.
  • Represents the Network to the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America (composed of ELCA, LC-MS, ELCIC, and independent Lutheran schools) and serves on its Board of Directors. Represents the Network to secular higher education agencies and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Serves as Lead Director for the ELCA on the Board of Directors of Educational and Institutional Insurance Administrators, Inc., providing insurance and risk management services to ELCA colleges and universities and independently incorporated seminaries.
  • Supervises the colleges and universities network coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Must understand Lutheran theology, and the mission and role of the churchwide organization in educational programs and institutions that are owned and operated by other entities of the ELCA.
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to Lutheran higher education.
  • Must understand the issues facing the churchwide organization’s educational partners in schools, higher education, and missional training.
  • Must have proven ability to identify and frame fundamental issues and convene leaders to generate and come to agreement concerning promising initiatives.
  • Must have a collaborative work style, including the ability to work effectively with diverse personalities with tact, patience, persistence, maturity, and flexibility.
  • Must have the ability to write and speak with clarity and vigor to a wide variety of audiences on the ELCA’s calling in education.
  • Proven experience with budget development and management, strong supervisory experience and strong interpersonal skills.
