The Graduate School of Design (GSD) seeks an editor to build upon the legacy of the Harvard Design Magazine and strengthen this important journal of scholarly and professional work and ideas as a dynamic resource for the School and design professions. In addition to producing two printed magazines a year, this role will take the lead in creating an engaging companion website. The successful candidate must have an ability to edit and shape scholarly writing; have a keen sense of visual standards, such as graphic identity and scrutiny for renderings, photography and data visualization. An awareness of shifting practices in design publications is also helpful.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Directs, manages, and participates in the development of the Harvard Design Magazine, which includes soliciting and selecting content, writing and editing articles, and overseeing distribution, marketing, and sales.

• Communicates with GSD faculty and collaborates with the Dean to develop content and design of the magazine.

• Creates and manages web version of the magazine and digital content.

• Develops and oversees Harvard Design Magazine budgets.

• Oversees the work of Harvard Design Magazine contracted designer.

• Supervises one support staff person and participates in the hiring and supervision of work- study students.

• Works on projects related to External Relations and Alumni Affairs.

• Works with GSD Communications team in co-planning and co-producing the GSD’s public communications.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
BA required and minimum of 7 years of progressive editing management required. Knowledge of the design fields preferred. Experience in both Print and Digital publications required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have strong editorial, writing, interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Must be able to establish and communicate priorities. Must be able to write and edit to deadline. Demonstrated experience in marketing and communications of publications as well as ability to manage subscription services and distribution growth is required.
