Duties: Recycling Specialist will support and monitor the University recycling programs through inspecting refuse and recycling containers, and educating the public through various means. Responsible for curbside container management. Provides back-up to the Supervisor as required and provides necessary support to crews as deemed appropriate. The mission of the University Campus Recycling Team is to provide excellence in waste reduction and recycling service, and education to the entire University community while attaining reduction, reuse, and recycling goals. This employee must collect records, perform research and provide technical information and industry/government networking for program and customers.
Promotes, plans and oversees Recycling program in the University. Assists Director of Building Services with the coordination of campus efforts in waste reduction by implementing recycling programs and other projects that promote waste reduction and reuse in campus. Composes correspondence to respond to customer requests and concerns. Performs research to analyze and evaluate the ongoing status of current recycling programs. Coordinates and implements public education for solid waste and recycling programs. Performs special administrative projects and research to evaluate feasibility of implementing new solid waste/recycling programs. Prepares and conducts presentations to the public, including schools, community groups/organizations and businesses. Provides assistance in training University community on solid waste/recycling programs. Assists with grant writing, awards and special recognition entries for environmental programs for solid waste/recycling programs. Assists with the coordination of information and education for solid waste/recycling programs with other departments, outside agencies, citizen groups and businesses. Coordinates, organizes and prepares development and design of education materials used for public outreach programs. Performs public relations and educational activities and programs. Develops and implements on-going educational events and educational campaigns. Attends professional organization meetings as directed. Works with and coordinates volunteers for programs. Assists with and prepares reports for management. Maintains data to evaluate and record progress of the University's efforts in waste reduction programs from an economic perspective. The employee must create monthly and yearly comprehensive reports for the recycling activities to submit to the Director for legislative compliance and program monitoring. Performs all assigned work duties and activities in accordance with GSU policies and procedures. Follows campus-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined by Risk Management and Safety.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalency and three years of administrative/technical experience in solid waste and recycling programs and/or public contract work; or a combination of education and experience. Must be able to acquire SWANA Recycling certification within one (1) year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
Knowledge of recycling systems, markets and operations. Should have strong interpersonal skills sufficient to provide excellent customer service, and productively solve problems individually or in a team setting. Should possess/demonstrate sufficient computer skills (e.g. generate spreadsheets, statistical analysis, graphs/charts, write memos/correspond) and good oral/written communication skills, including creating/giving public presentations. Should have experience innovating creative educational materials. Should have valid State of Georgia driver license and pass the forklift and van training classes. Should be able to lift/move up to 30 lbs. Should have sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to bend or stoop repeatedly, sit or stand for long periods of time.
Salary Range $32,073 to $42,000
