Department Chair of English

Job Summary/Basic Function: The English Department Chair is responsible for providing leadership to the faculty and staff at one of Georgia Perimeter College's five campuses. The English Department Chair maintains academic quality and administrative efficiency in the department and supports the Dean of English in carrying out division goals. The Department Chair must be familiar with best teaching and administrative practices and must be familiar with the college's core curriculum and faculty evaluation system. This is a twelve-month administrative position with tenure track ranking also requiring 3-4 hours of instruction in the discipline each year.

Required Experience: A minimum of three (3) years teaching experience and two (2) years of supervisory, managerial or significant leadership experience, preferably in a college setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. (A total of 48 semester hours of part-time teaching experience will be considered equivalent to two years of full-time teaching experience.) A candidate must have demonstrated administrative experience comparable to the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of an academic leadership position.

Required Education: A minimum of a Ph.D. in English from an accredited college or university is required.

• Ability to teach on the collegiate level.
• Ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods, relate to students and facilitate student learning.
• Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology is required.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong leadership skills with ability to problem solve and exhibit sound judgment.
• Appropriate delegation skills.
• Detailed organization and time management skills are necessary.
