Florida’s newest state university is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as our Librarian.
Florida Polytechnic University was created by the 2012 Florida legislature to be the state’s STEM-focused four-year public university. With a range of innovative undergraduate and master’s programs planned, both online and classroom-based, the university seeks to recruit inaugural classes of freshmen, transfer and graduate students for fall 2014 and to grow quickly to become a major higher education presence within the state and beyond. The cornerstone of the new campus is an academic center designed by internationally-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Polk County, home to Florida Polytechnic, has a population in excess of 600,000 and is within an hour’s drive of five million residents in the Orlando and Tampa metro areas
SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will provide leadership in assessing and determining library resource needs for an innovative STEAM university; oversee and assist in acquiring, interpreting, organizing, administering and preserving information resources. Maintain electronic journal database; serve as technical liaison for electronic journal vendors; support the development of library archives and records function; serve as library liaison to the faculty, staff and students; promote library services across the academic disciplines and support units; assist in coordinating and cataloging bibliographic or monographic materials and digital collections using multiple formats; assist in planning and directing projects; supervising, training and evaluating library staff; develop and conduct library instruction sessions, workshops and tours for university and outside groups; contribute to the development of policies and best practices and address copyright and fair use principles and other library regulations; assist in the development of assessment initiatives, strategic plans, and budgets that ensure the library’s resources remain current and support broader institutional mission. The candidate will work successfully with library patrons, facilitating the effective use of general and curriculum specific information that supports face-to-face and online classes and academic programs; assist patrons in location and evaluating library resources via telephone, email, and live chat; use a variety of formats, including but not limited to virtual reference and web-based research guides to assist in keeping library resources up-to-date. The candidate will develop services to address the needs of users from diverse age groups, cultural, ethnic, primary language backgrounds and varied levels of academic preparedness; and take into consideration special accommodations referenced within the American Disabilities Act (ADA).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Working knowledge and skills to support standards library systems and broad application of specialized library systems.
• Knowledge of current and emerging national cataloging standards and practices, digital library/digital collections organization, practices and content management systems.
• Working knowledge of HTML, web pages and content management systems.
• Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
• Possesses strong written and oral communication skills.
• MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent and one year of experience working in a cataloging environment or other relevant library experience..
EXPECTED STARTING SALARY: The salary will be commensurate with years of experience.
