The major responsibilities of this position are to assist with administration of labor agreements and negotiations between Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and the instructional bargaining units representing employees engaged in the delivery and support of academic services; including the American Association of University Professors and the Michigan Federation of Teachers. This position will translate Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) from language to practice.

Requirements:

  • Masters of Business Administration or similar degree focused on Management/Labor Relations.
  • Seven years experience administering collective bargaining agreements, including grievances, as well as experience in negotiation of such agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals and objectives.
  • Proficient in analyzing and planning for successful negotiations.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Strong team and relationship building skills.
  • Outstanding communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Solid understanding of the legal requirements surrounding bargaining.
  • Working knowledge of labor agreements, benefits and compensation practices, particularly in the public sector.
  • Ability to be a liaison with the Office of Legal Affairs.

Other Desired Qualifications Essential Duties

  • Help develop and implement negotiation strategies; prepare bargaining proposals; interpret the contract and provide guidance and direction to management on the application of the agreements; explore the use of alternative negotiation strategies and tactics.
  • Solicit input from University leadership, the Benefits, Compensation, and Academic Affairs’ offices, and others as appropriate, and incorporate into collective bargaining proposals.
  • Serve as liaison between AHR and the Benefits and Compensation & Employment Departments and participate on cross functional teams that address benefits, wellness and compensation matters.
  • Ensure consistent interpretation, compliance and administration of CBA terms across the University, particularly within the Academic Affairs function. This will include the development of procedures and delivery of training in all aspects of contract interpretation and policy administration.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President and union representatives to develop prompt solutions to questions and concerns pertaining to CBAs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of CBAs – identify provisions that are effective and those that are not; develop and present alternatives to improve contract terms.
