Job Description: The Department of Oncology is a new department in the Brody School of Medicine at ECU formed to serve as the academic home for clinical and research faculty whose primary focus is providing and advancing cancer care.
The Department Chair will build upon current and envisioned strengths in oncologic services to provide compassionate, cutting-edge clinical services through the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center, and outstanding training and research opportunities through the academic department and collaboratively with the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill and its NCI-designated Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Chair reports to the Dean for all department matters, and will function as the Director of the University of North Carolina-designated public service center, a nascent entity which focuses on cancer awareness, screening, and survivorship.
The Chair of the Department of Oncology will be expected to form a multidisciplinary department; to attract faculty from all oncology specialties; and to cultivate adjunct and affiliate faculty appointments across the continuum of the East Carolina University campus and the community.
The Chair of the Department of Oncology will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic and research programs of the department. The Chair is also responsible for all patient care activities and quality of care for the department.
The Chair has financial authority over the state appropriated budget assigned to the department, extramural research funding received, practice plan revenues and expenses, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the department in accordance with applicable ECU, BSOM, and ECU Physicians policies and practices. The Chair holds a tenured academic appointment.
The Chair must have extensive leadership and personnel management experience, as well as an appreciation for research efforts.
This position reports directly to the Dean of the Brody School of Medicine. The position works alongside the other department Chairs, and in association with the Vice Dean, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Deans and Assistant Deans.
The Chair collaborates closely with the Executive Director for ECU Physicians and also interacts frequently with other key School, ECU, Hospital, and community officials.

Minimum Qualifications: MD or MD/PhD (or equivalent), from an appropriately accredited institution.
Board Certified in medicine, surgery or obstetrics & gynecology with fellowship training and certification.
Advanced certification or degree in administration or business, desirable.
A minimum of 10 years of successful leadership and faculty experience providing cancer care in an integrated academic health center and working collaboratively with physicians and administrators.
The successful candidate must meet the criteria for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure.
Evidence of building successful clinical and academic services and programs.
Ability to articulate a vision for building and expanding the services, culture, and reputation of oncology care in the region.
Demonstrated ability to cultivate a collaborative team culture.
Experience in relating effectively to multiple constituencies in a dynamic, collaborative, and interdependent environment.
Success in developing funded clinical research programs and fostering educational excellence.
