Job Description: The Director of Counseling and Student Development (DCSD) has responsibility for maximizing the academic success, personal development and graduation of SoDM students and residents.
Primary responsibilities focus on student counseling, student success and student development, while contributing broadly to the overall mission of the SoDM.
The DCSD provides academic and personal counseling for individual students and groups of students, develops and implements student development and student retention strategies and programs, provides faculty consultations, and serves as a resource in promoting a humanistic culture within the school.
The DCSD reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
Maximizes the academic success and retention of dental students by:
Providing assessment and interventions in such areas as study skills, learning and cognitive development, and content mastery.
Providing assessment and interventions related to academic deficiencies and performance anxiety.
Maximizes the personal and professional development of dental students by:
Providing assessment, interventions and referrals related to the personal concerns and problems of students including but not limited to stress management, interpersonal problems, personal adjustment and psychological disorders.
Providing instruction and intervention related to conflict resolution, communication, leadership and emotional intelligence.
Facilitating adjustment to the rigors of dental education and professional responsibility.
Assisting faculty advisors to student groups and student group officers in organizing and developing productive student groups.
Facilitating the development of students' leadership and team building skills.
Serves as a resource for educational and development programming by:
Planning and facilitating in-house and outreach educational enhancement programs and psycho-educational programs that support student and resident development.
Developing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating enhancement programs covering a wide range of student, resident, faculty and staff development topics.
Providing critical incident debriefings for students, residents, staff and faculty related to deaths, disasters, or other losses or seminal events.
Interacting with faculty and administration in identifying and addressing matters of mutual concern to support student development.

Contributes broadly to the mission of the SoDM by:
Assisting with marketing, recruitment, admissions and (future) alumni relations, as needed.
Participating in ongoing professional development through writing, research, active involvement in professional associations, and presentations at conferences.
Engaging in community outreach activities.
Assisting in writing grants related to expanding and supporting the mission of the school.
Traveling for professional activities, as needed.
Carrying out other administrative duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology or appropriate mental health field.
Demonstrated skills in counseling, assessment, supervision, consulting and leadership.
Knowledge of psychological counseling and student development theory and techniques.
Demonstrated competencies in the development and implementation of programs designed to facilitate student growth.
Eligibility for North Carolina licensure as a Psychologist or Licensed Professional Counselor.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Experience in higher education.
Experience with health sciences students
