Job Description: The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education functions as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for GME and is responsible for the oversight and administration of the institution's Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited and non-accredited programs, and is also responsible for assuring compliance with ACGME Institutional Requirements.
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education implements and monitors compliance with policies that promote a positive work and educational environment for the resident physicians and fellows in the medical center's training programs.
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is assigned to the Office of the Dean, Brody School of Medicine. As the DIO for the medical center, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is appointed as the Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, with vote.
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education is directly responsible to the Dean of the Brody School of Medicine and the President of Vidant Medical Center for the conduct of all residency and fellowship training programs at the medical center.
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education directly reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Brody School of Medicine, and as DIO directly reports to the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Vidant Medical Center.
The Associate Dean has delegated authority from the Dean of the medical school to represent the institution in the area of Graduate Medical Education with multiple national and local external organizations, including the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and Vidant Medical Center officials.
The scope of this position encompasses direct responsibility for both clinical and educational program compliance with policies and regulations that are complex and frequently changing.
The training programs supervised by this position encompass a combined total of over 400 post-doctoral learners, in more than a 25 different medical specialties.
The person who will fill this role will spend a minimum of 0.8 FTE in the administration and leadership of Graduate Medical Education and no more than 0.2 FTE in clinical practice or service. The successful candidate must also meet criteria to become a member of the Vidant Medical Center Staff.
Program Oversight Responsibilities
1.Ensure there are sufficient institutional resources for effective implementation and development of graduate training programs, in compliance with program and institutional requirements.
2.Develop and implement a strategic plan for Graduate Medical Education.
3.Assist the Training Program Directors in implementing educational curricula common to all training programs.
4.Assure all new resident physicians and fellows are appropriately oriented to the institution.
5.Assist training programs with ongoing professional development of Program Directors, Fellowship Directors, faculty, and Program Coordinators as needed.
6.Assess and communicate resource needs of the training programs, Program Directors, resident physicians and fellows to the Brody School of Medicine and Vidant Medical Center.
7.Design and implement recruiting strategies to enhance all programs.
Minimum Qualifications: MD or DO degree from an appropriately accredited institution
Senior academic rank in the department of his/her discipline
Five years of progressively responsible academic and administrative experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Personal Characteristics:
1.Understanding of Graduate Medical Education systems (university and hospital).
2.Knowledge of medical education principles and resources.
3.Supervisory ability and leadership style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality and flexibility.
4.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and report preparation skills.
