The School of Education at Duquesne University invites applications for a 9-month, faculty position in Literacy Education. The position will start August 13, 2012 and end May 11, 2013. The ideal candidate would have the following qualities:

• A well-established research agenda in one or more of the following areas within the broader field of literacy education: Reading, Digital Literacies, Elementary and/or Middle Level Education, English Language Arts, and Urban Education.
• A minimum of three years’ experience teaching elementary and/or middle grades.
• An interest in sharing their knowledge and experiences in Reading, Literacy, and/or English Language Arts with a new group of students and faculty.
• A willingness to build new relationships with individuals at Duquesne University, in the greater interest of advancing teaching and learning practices and opportunities within the fields of Literacy and Reading.

Responsibilities associated with this position may include: (a) Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Elementary/Middle Level English Language Arts and/or the Reading Master’s Certification Program; (b) participating in meetings and discussions related to building DILE in general and providing leadership in the continuing development of the Literacy Department specifically; and (c) assisting in a national search for a permanent tenure-track literacy education position. Additionally, it is expected that the Visiting Professor will interface with the Reading Clinic – which provides students and their parent’s affordable, research-based assessment and tutorial services in a nurturing environment that fosters confidence and academic achievement.

This is an ideal opportunity for an established scholar who is looking for a 9 month ‘change of scenery’ in the dynamic Department of Instruction and Leadership in Education (DILE) within Duquesne’s School of Education. Additionally, Pittsburgh offers a rich array of varied K-12 classroom settings that would be of interest to those looking to conduct research within urban environments.

Our collegial and dynamic department currently has 16 research-active faculty, more than 400 graduate students, and over 350 undergraduate students. Faculty research interests cover the breadth of the educational field focusing on curriculum, instruction, technology, and leadership in teaching and teacher education. In our courses, we seek to model our mission: In order to develop teachers who care about students, we thoughtfully care for our students as they take education classes. Our goal is to combine scholarship and teaching to advance the educational professions. The Department of Instruction and Leadership in Education offers the Ed.D., M.S., B.S. degrees and a variety of teaching certifications.
