This professional will be responsible for providing career advice and
counsel to Duke Law students
and alumni regarding all aspects of obtaining post-graduate judicial
clerkships and for facilitating the
receipt of clerkship offers. This position is ideal for lawyers who
have worked as a judicial clerk and
who would like to collaborate with students, judges, faculty, and
staff, while learning about law
schools
and educational administration. The position reports to the Associate
Dean & Director of the Career
Center and is an integral part of the Career Center team, but works
extremely closely with the Faculty
Clerkship Committee in particular, as well as with other faculty and
staff.

Student and Alumni Advising # 40%
# Provide personalized advice on clerkships and summer judicial
internships;
# Provide advice on clerkship resources, application materials and
interview preparation;
# Lead and enhance the student Clerkship Education Curriculum;
# Serve as key resource on specific clerkship opportunities;
# Strategize with students, faculty,
and alumni on clerkship possibilities for students and
alumni;
# Develop creative ways to heighten student interest to increase the
number and nature
of clerkships for Duke students and alumni.

Collaboration with Clerkship Stakeholders # 40%
# Initiate outreach and maintain contact with judges to determine
hiring needs and
identify opportunities to match student to specific judges;
# Collaborate with faculty to deepen
relationships with judges, including those visiting
Duke Law School, in a structured and strategic manner;
# Maintain close contact with Duke Law alumni judges, alumni who are
currently clerking,
and alumni who have clerked within the past five years;
# Work closely with faculty to advise students and organize Faculty
Clerkship Committee
meetings;
# Serve as Duke Law liason to regular discussion among law school and
judiciary
clerkship-policy development groups.
# Lead marketing of Clerkships by creating innovative educational
opportunities and
marketing materials;
# Develop and maintain content for the clerkship portion of the Career
Center website;
# Collaborate with Law Alumni Association Career Committee and other
leadership to
devise innovative strategize to utilize alumni assistance and place
Duke clerks.

Clerkship Application Oversight # 20%
# Provide oversight and leadership to the judicial clerkship
application process, including
collaborating with students, faculty, and academic assistant, and
others;
# Provide oversight to CARS (Duke Law School Clerkship Application and

Recommendation System), including user education and collaboration with
IT to evaluate, maintain
and enhance to the CARS program;
# Use, educate others and advise on the national OSCAR on-line
application system,
including work with students, faculty and alumni and administrative
support to manage the application
upload process;
# Serve as a contact person for all questions regarding the procedural
and strategic
aspects of clerkship applications;
# Identify new analytical tools to support and enhance the clerkship
applicationprocess;
# Ensure the Law School has current contact information for federal and
state judges;
# Manage and analyze information on student interviews and offers of
employment;
# Collaborate with colleagues to achieve these goals.

Required Qualifications
Education/Training/Experience:
JD degree is required.
Experience as a judicial clerk is strongly preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of work experience is also preferred, including at least 3 years of professional legal practice.

Active involvement with the judiciary and/or career development experience in a law school is valuable.

Prior knowledge of the legal industry would be helpful.

Understand how to use technology and to collaborate with IT to achieve organizational goals.

Use of the MS Office Suite programs.

Ability to set goals, make decisions, prioritize and initiate new projects.

Good judgment and creative problem solving.

Willingness to take ownership and accept evolving responsibilities as situations require.
