Duties are numbered for convenience and do not indicate order in terms of importance, frequency that the duty is performed, or the amount of time spent on the duty.
1. Responsible for managing and implementing a comprehensive strategy which enhances student learning, and provides a common vision and direction for veteran students.
2. Supervises assigned area of responsibility and staff by assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, resolving work problems, communicating job expectations, training employees, and developing professional growth development opportunities.
3. Conducts annual employee evaluations and effectively recommends pay increases, promotions and other personnel actions.
4. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime as appropriate.
5. Participates in employee selection process. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval, and in collaboration with Human Resources.
6. Carries out, explains, interprets and enforces policy.
7. Manages and coordinates the implementation of day to day programming activities for veteran programs, activities and events.
8. Provide enrolled veterans with information and referrals on academic, career, personal, financial and social matters.
9. Reviews academic evaluations, enrollment, and student requirements to insure compliance with Veteran Affairs regulations, and Columbus State policies. Monitors veteran students' academic progress, course enrollment, and other reporting requirements.
10. Insures the college is in compliance with state and federal agencies by maintaining a thorough knowledge of veterans' affairs policies and procedures; prepares and submits reports to the appropriate federal and state entities.
11. Acts as a liaison between the Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist and disabled veterans; controls the issuance of forms used to cover educational costs.
12. Communicates with the appropriate state and federal agencies to resolve any conflicting issues as needed. Coordinates the process for clearing students in overpayment status with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
13. Serves as a liaison for veterans services with Career Services, Advising Services, and Counseling Services; provides assistance in order to assess career and academic needs, or educational attainment obstacles of veteran students. Assist with the coordination and monitoring of interventions for at-risk students.
14. Serves as a liaison for veterans services with academic division chairpersons, academic advisors, and administrative personnel; provides assistance in resolving problems in relation to veteran student issues.
15. Provides and submits reports of veteran services statistical data which includes, but not limited to, special project activities, student contacts, retention, degree completion, and other data as requested.
16. Implement a veteran's outreach and recruitment plan. Assists students in applying for a wide variety of Department of Veteran Affairs programs. Makes appropriate referrals to campus and community resources/agencies.
17. Review and continually update the veteran services website in conjunction with institutional advancement, along with other resources.
18. Promote and support the development of a campus student veteran organization.
19. Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and predictable attendance and works overtime as required meeting workload demands. Performs other related duties as required. Required education/experience An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Minimum qualifications for this position are: Bachelor's degree in counseling or psychology and a minimum of three (3) years experience working in veterans affairs, or a post-secondary institution or other government regulated programs or combined administrative and clinical experience required. Have organizational experience at a university, with veterans' services. The employee will also have excellent leadership, communication and management skill; be able to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student community; and to develop departmental programs. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of: Department of Veterans Affairs database (VAONCE); college counseling models; functional supervisory practices; Veterans' services policies and procedures; personal and group counseling methods; how to conduct an individual needs assessment; the American with Disabilities Act as amended and regulations as they relate to military changes that affect military service members; student development theory; student support programs and services; management principles and practices; crisis intervention techniques; applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures; legal issues surrounding Veterans' services and education policy development; mental health, chemical dependency and veteran related counseling.
Ability to: balance responsibilities and collaboration with Student Affairs and other Columbus State departments; actively collaborate across communities, including faculty, staff and students in responding to Veteran student and campus needs; work with and be sensitive to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and to be committed to a diverse community; speak before audiences; be proactive, plan and evaluate; react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; exercise sound judgment in appraising difficult situations an in making appropriate decisions and judgment; engage students, faculty, staff and other college professionals in challenging conversations about Veteran student related concerns; make critical decisions about veteran student welfare and college safety and security; develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; serve as key liaison to Student Conduct, Public Safety, Disability Services, and others as needed; provide training and education, with an emphasis on veteran services; and assist with policy and procedure development within Shared Governance; be flexible; analytical and student-centered.

Preferred Qualifications Masters Degree and/or military service background preferred. Training/Certifications Required
