Job Description An individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.

1) Patrols campus property by foot, bicycle, or vehicle. Assists Police Officers. Maintains good public relations with student body, faculty, staff, and general public.

2) Monitors, reports and may assist in responding to occurrences, emergencies, violations, safety or traffic hazards, security conditions and other unusual situations.

3) Maintains thorough working knowledge of all emergency management procedures as described in Department and College policies and procedures.

4) Assists Department and other College personnel in the operation of central monitoring systems, the emergency operation center, access control, alarms, fire suppression equipment, and the emergency message system. Said duties include monitoring systems, performing maintenance, calling for repair and giving appropriate notifications, alarm acknowledgments and other responses.

5) Primary responder for fire, security, and mechanical alarms and issues involving elevators and boilers. Assists students, visitors, and staff and responds to non-police calls as determined by dispatch per Department guidelines.

6) Monitors buildings, parking lots and grounds. Maintains daily activity logs. Enforces parking regulations.

7) Controls access to buildings and facilities. May check identification of persons entering and leaving the premises, thereby protecting buildings against unauthorized entry. Verifies identification. Directs visitors to proper locations.

8) Performs security inspections of buildings and grounds.

9) Engages in public contact via telephone, radio, email, and/or face-to-face communication in order to take non-police complaints, answer inquiries, and provide direction (e.g. card access issues, alarm malfunctions, special events).

10) Reports emergencies and equipment malfunctions in accordance with established procedures.

11) Escorts staff, students, faculty and visitors about campus.

12) Assists with coordination and completion of inspections by OSHA and other federal, state or local authorities.

13) Locks and unlocks buildings, rooms, and offices. Assists with building evacuations and emergencies.

14) Administers CPR, performs first aid, and operates an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED). Secures ambulatory services.

15) Inputs and updates non-police incident report information and may generate specified reports.

16) Provides Safety & Security training to Public Safety personnel. May provide training to other departments and the campus community.

17) Maintains accurate records. Completes and maintains required documentation, such as non-police incident reports and complaints. Refers potential criminal information to Community Policing Supervisor for further investigation.

18) Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.

19) Responds to and handles alarm calls. Takes appropriate action at the scene and maintains equipment. Provides assistance and public service to students, faculty and others.

20) Assists in safeguarding against violence, theft, vandalism and other criminal behavior. Enforces College and Department policies, procedures, rules and other regulations. Assists with lockouts and secures campus buildings. Required education/experience Minimum qualifications for this position are: High School Degree or GED with 1 to 3 years closely related experience in security/law enforcement. Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications and licensure utilized in the Columbus State Community College Public Safety Department. Must successfully pass a drug screen, criminal background check, and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment. Must be insurable to operate College vehicles. An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of safety, security and emergency management procedures and requirements; federal, state and local laws, particularly Ohio Revised Code Chapter 29 and search and seizure laws; safety precautions and procedures; non-violent crisis intervention; and computer software, programs and applications.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with stressful situations; comprehend oral and written information; attend mandatory training; work independently; demonstrate initiative; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; maintain confidential and sensitive information; assess and react appropriately to medical and non-medical emergencies; perform physical demands and exhibit mental aptitude needed to perform safety and security duties including recognizing unusual or threatening conditions and taking appropriate action; deal sensitively and effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds and varying cultures; function in adverse conditions; and maintain self-control.

Skill in verbal and written communications, including grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation use; writing accident reports; mediating and peacefully resolving conflicts; interviewing and communicating with students, staff, faculty and general public; application of software programs. Preferred Qualifications Training/Certifications Required State motor vehicle operator's license. Employee must be insurable to operate a vehicle, as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED can be obtained and maintained post employment.
