TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, nine-month, tenure-track appointment to begin August 2012
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. required. Candidates should be enthusiastic about undergraduate teaching and liberal arts education, student-faculty collaborative research, and experiential learning. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to a variety of campus-wide initiatives. Candidates with full-time professorial experience are encouraged to apply. Area of specialization is open. While candidates with expertise in clinical, community, or health psychology are desirable, the most important criteria are the ability to teach and supervise student-led research.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching Specific courses will depend on the successful candidate’s specialization and will include some of the following: General Psychology, Advanced Research Practicum, and courses selected from Introductory Research Methods, Statistics, Intersections (our college-wide common first-year course), senior-level interdisciplinary capstone course, and new courses developed by the candidate that serve the department and the college in general via the Liberal Arts Core. All psychology faculty supervise student-led empirical research. College Service The normal faculty load is teaching 21-23 semester hours per year, service on committees, and participation in the general life of the campus community. Faculty members are expected to be professionally active. Research or other scholarly activity, especially in collaboration with students, and professional work related to the discipline and teaching are all considered appropriate. Publication, while considered desirable, is not a primary objective. Departmental Duties Psychology faculty advise majors and non-majors, supervise internships, and share in administrative duties and the life of the department.
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY The department of four faculty is a very collegial group of educators who offer a core major focused on research skills (e.g., General Psychology, research methods courses, statistics, research practicum) to which students add elective psychology classes. Our goal is to prepare students both for successful graduate study and for B.A.-level employment in a variety of areas. Of the roughly 20 majors who graduate each year, approximately 30% go directly to graduate school with another 30-40% following after a period of on-the-job-experience. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one of our international study abroad programs or in the Metropolitan Center experience in Chicago or Washington, D.C. Additional information about the department, our students, and the advertised position is available at : http://www.central.edu/academics/majors/psychology/
