California State University, Dominguez Hills is a highly diverse, urban university located in the South Bay and primarily serving the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Its 346-acre park-like campus is situated on the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest Spanish land grant in the Los Angeles area. Established in 1960, CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system.
This community-based university prides itself on its outstanding faculty and friendly, student-centered environment. Class section size is small as compared with large research universities and classes are taught by the faculty, not by teaching assistants. Many of the students are the first in their families to earn a college degree and CSU Dominguez Hills enrolls a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students. Enrollment exceeds 12,850 students, of which about 2,000 enroll via distance education opportunities. The student population is among the most ethnically and culturally rich in the nation: 40% Hispanic, 30% African American, 18% Caucasian, 11% Asian/Pacific Islanders, and 1% Native American.
CSU Dominguez Hills offers 45 baccalaureate degrees, 24 master’s degrees, and a number of certificate and credential programs. Known for its excellence in teacher education, nursing, psychology, business administration, and digital media arts, the University also offers new degree programs in computer science, criminal justice, recreation and leisure studies, social work, and communication disorders. CSU Dominguez Hills is nationally ranked for its distance learning programs and offers more distance learning than any other California institution.
The Multicultural Center on campus promotes the exploration of diverse heritages, values and cultural experiences by offering a wide range of co-curricular activities and programs throughout the academic year. CSU Dominguez Hills is home to an award-winning University Theatre where most of the plays produced by the Theatre Arts department are performed. The University Art Gallery is considered to be one of the major exhibition spaces of the South Bay area. The newly expanded and renovated Loker Student Union features 120,000 square feet that includes a fine dining restaurant and sports bar, food vendor space, lounge and study areas, event facilities, and the beautiful 800-seat Dominguez Ballroom.
CSU Dominguez Hills is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II institution that competes in the California Collegiate Athletic
Association (CCAA). CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the most athletically competitive and honored schools in the CCAA, with 23 conference titles and four national championships to date, including its most recent, the NCAA D-II Men’s Soccer National Championship. CSU Dominguez Hills sponsors 11 intercollegiate athletic teams.
On campus is the Home Depot Center, a U.S. Olympic training site and sports complex for world-class soccer, tennis, track and field, lacrosse, and cycling. The Home Depot Center also hosts the CSU Dominguez Hills graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies each year.
