Antioch College is seeking a scholar/educator/director for the position of Director of the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom at Antioch College. This position is a full-time position (with a twelve month work year), reports directly to the President and will provide the intellectual and administrative leadership required to creatively place cultural diversity and intellectual freedom at the core of Antioch College’s future. The Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom is a community resource that is designed to promote the conditions on campus for multi-culturalism, anti-racism, and engagement with issues of power and privilege to educate faculty staff and student towards an inclusive community. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties:
• Honor the legacy of Coretta Scott King by working with others at Antioch College to revise and re-energize a long-term vision for the CSK Center.
• Provide overall leadership for strategic, program planning and implementation in the CSK Center.
• Lead and contribute to campus programs and initiatives that support cultural and intellectual freedom, including lectures, presentations, concerts, plays, and other events.
• Build bridges and create partnerships that support student and faculty involvement in experiential education indicatives in the areas of social justice and community building (i.e., embedded or field education programs nationally or abroad, co-op opportunities, etc.).
• Work in support of diversity initiatives and faculty, staff, and student skills development in multicultural competence.
• Support students at Antioch in their path to graduation.
• Promote an understanding of the supports and systems that are most effective in helping students from under-represented groups succeed at Antioch and in higher education.
• Work with campus community members to create programming that supports and empowers the appreciation and celebration of human diversity on campus through collaborative efforts with high schools and community organizations, with special emphasis on communities in the Dayton/Miami Valley area.
• Work with campus community members to implement training and programs, such as a speaker’s series, which educate students and staff about diversity, assist in advancing social responsibility among the community, and enrich the college’s curriculum;
• Promote intellectual freedom and respect for diversity on campus.
• Contribute to the academic and co-op curriculum as a jointly appointed faculty member in the area of expertise the candidate brings. Curricular contribution would be equal to a quarter-time to half-time (6-12 credits) faculty position including teaching or co-teaching courses, student advising and contributing to curriculum development.
• Demonstrated success in developing activities and programming to improve human relationships.
• Demonstrated success and a strong commitment to establishing collaborative relationships at the college and in the community to meet educational and cultural needs.
• Demonstrated success in short- and long-term strategic planning and implementation for an organization.
• Evidenced knowledge of understanding and monitoring program evaluation and assessment.
• Evidenced skill in providing excellent written and oral communication that is transparent, clear and ongoing.
• Demonstrated experience in effectively facilitating workshops and trainings related to issues affecting underrepresented populations.
• Demonstrated experience in working effectively with diverse groups and constituencies that represent a variety of identities in campus or external community environments.
• Knowledge of training methods, conflict resolution and local, state and federal regulations related to civil rights and Americans with disabilities.
• Ability and interest in teaching at the college level on issues related to inclusion, systems of oppression, and power and privilege.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibilities pertaining to public/human services, student development, programming development or related area of service.
• Ph.D., J.D. or D.D. (preferred), or Masters in ethnic or cultural studies, psychology, sociology, history or other relevant field.
• Minimum of 3-5 years teaching at the college level.

A private, independent nonprofit college in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Antioch College offers a four-year, undergraduate residential college experience. The Antioch College curriculum is distinctive in that it integrates classroom and experiential education. Antioch College plans to award the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Antioch was one of the first historically white colleges to actively recruit black students. One of the most celebrated champions of human and civil rights, Coretta Scott King, in partnership with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ignited democracy movements worldwide. King enrolled at Antioch College in 1945 as part of the college’s Interracial Education Scholarship program, which had recruited her sister, Edythe, two years earlier. Though she left the College in 1949, she remained connected to her alma mater, returning in 1965 when her husband delivered the commencement address, and again in 1967 to receive the baccalaureate degree that she should have received in 1951. She delivered the commencement address in 1982 and in 2004 accepted the Horace Mann Award from the Alumni Association for her determination to promote nonviolent social change. In 2005, she honored the College by allowing it to use her name on a Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom. The Coretta Scott King Center opened on March 27, 2007.

For 90 years, a critical component of the Antioch College education has been the cooperative work program (Co-op) established by former President Arthur E. Morgan. The off-campus work program allows students to connect academic knowledge with the professional world of work. The work program expands learning experiences through paid employment in a supervised work setting often related to the student’s coursework. In addition to on-the-job-learning, a high value is placed on the learning students do off-the-job in the communities in which they live while on Co-op.
