With assistance from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and Bard College announce a unique three-year post-doctoral fellowship opportunity. We are searching for a creative and innovative scholar with a sense of adventure who will teach halftime and pursue research halftime in the fields of history/philosophy of science or Anthropology/Ethnomusicology. During the first two years of the fellowship tenure, the teaching and research will take place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on the campus of AUCA. During the final year of the fellowship, the fellow will move to Bard College.

An international, multi-disciplinary learning community in the American liberal arts tradition, AUCA develops enlightened and passionate leaders for the democratic transformation of Central Asia. Its 1200 students are drawn primarily from the five former Soviet Central Asian republics, but include a growing number from the larger region and the world. Almost all of education at AUCA occurs in English, and most students receive degrees both from the Kyrgyz Ministry of Education and from Bard College. According to the general education requirements of the Ministry of Education in Kyrgyzstan, all students must take a 3-credit course in the history and philosophy of science. Such a course is particularly important at AUCA because most students major in Social Science disciplines and thus it is through this course (in addition to required courses in Mathematics and Computing) that the university equips them with the basic tools of scientific reasoning. Courses on Anthropology are taught in the Department of Anthropology, although the successful candidate will likely be asked to teach in our First Year Seminar program as well. Kyrgyzstan itself is a fascinating place to live—the only functioning parliamentary democracy in Central Asia, this strategically located country boasts exceptional natural beauty and welcoming people. The AUCA faculty, which consists mostly of local faculty who have completed part or all of their post-graduate education abroad, makes up a vibrant and welcoming community that is eager to welcome colleagues from all over the world.

To apply, please send a letter of interest, a CV, a brief writing sample, and evidence of teaching interests (including proposed undergraduate syllabi and teaching evaluations, if available) to AUCA Dean of faculty Elida Nogoibaeva at epielida@gmail.com. In addition, please ask three people who are knowledgeable about your work to send letters of support to the same address. Application deadline, February 24, 2012.

Salary and benefits are competitive and include a travel and housing allowance while in Kyrgyzstan. Position begins in August 2012. For further information about AUCA, see http://www.auca.kg/ For further information about Bard College, see http://www.bard.edu/
