About Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City

The Department of Music at Oklahoma State University is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and is proud to offer a wide variety of degree programs . These programs provide intensive courses of study that prepare students as emerging music professionals in a wide variety of career paths.  The Department also offers many opportunities for non-music majors to participate in ensembles and applied instruction. OSU became an All-Steinway School in 2008 with the purchase of 30 additional Steinway pianos.

The Bachelor of Music degree has three options: Music Performance; Music Education (instrumental and vocal); and with Elective Studies in Business. The Music Performance degree focuses on the intensive applied study of the student’s instrument or voice, and therefore it is ideally suited to those who seek a performing career, or to continue applied studies on the graduate level. The Music Education option prepares students for state certification as public school teachers. It also includes required courses in education, while retaining a strong commitment to excellence in performance .  The Music Business option includes several courses from OSU’s Spears School of Business core curriculum, and is designed for students considering careers in arts management, advertising, publication, music merchandising, and recording industry management.

For students preferring a broader liberal arts curriculum with greater elective flexibility, we also offer the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music.
The Department offers the Master of Music degree in Pedagogy and Performance, with specialized tracks in Applied Performance, Conducting and Music Education. This program, with its varied options, provides students with advanced course work and individual instruction that will position them for a wide range of professional music opportunities, whether to enhance their credentials as public school teachers, to successfully compete for teaching positions in higher education, or to prepare for study at the doctoral level.

The Music Department provides individual studio instruction on virtually every instrument and voice. Other learning opportunities include a broad spectrum of pre-professional training and the opportunity to perform in more than 15 large and chamber ensembles. Over 150 concerts and recitals are presented each year, including performances by faculty and guest artists of national and international reputation, student degree recitals, large ensembles and chamber groups.

The Department is staffed by an artist-faculty of 35, and is housed in the Seretean Center for Performing Arts. This facility provides a 600-
seat theater, 800-seat Concert Hall, a large music multi-media lab, practice rooms, and spaces for studio, classroom and ensemble instruction.
