Georgia Highlands College

About Georgia Highlands College

Since 1970, Georgia Highlands College has served the citizens of Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. Founded as Floyd Junior College, it now serves more than 5,700 students in the region.  It became a limited-mission, four-year state college in May 2011.

The student body is composed of primarily a female population (63 percent), with 37 percent male students.  The median student age is 23.  As a commuter college, the institution attracts students from all over the region, including those from southeastern Tennessee and northeastern Alabama.  But it also boasts an international population from 49 countries.  Minorities make up 33 percent of the enrollment.  The fulltime student/faculty ration is 21:1.

GHC students are enrolled in 40 transfer and career programs leading to two-year associate degrees, a number in health-care fields.  The most popular majors are nursing, business and education.  The nursing program expanded in 2006, adding a new cohort in Marietta and enabling the college to graduate 150 license-eligible students each year.  In fall 2013, the first cohort of baccalaureate students enrolled, and completed, their bachelor’s degrees in 2015.  GHC also maintains an agreement the University of West Georgia and Kennesaw State University so that students on the Floyd (Rome) and Paulding (Dallas) campuses, respectively, can stay on-site and complete their bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education. Forty-three percent of GHC students transfer to other institutions to continue their education.

Students may participate in a variety of extra-curricular programs, including academic, political and social organizations, student media and athletics.  In 2011 the college joined the National Junior College Athletic Association and launched its inaugural, competitive basketball teams in fall 2012.  Baseball and softball began competitive play during the 2013-2014 academic year. All GHC athletic teams have had significant success, especially the men's basketball team which finished second at the 2015 National NJCAA Division 1 Championship.

As an equal opportunity institution, Georgia Highlands College is committed to recruiting, hiring, training, promoting and educating persons without regard to age, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.  GHC expects successful applicants to share this commitment.
